PRP treatment for joint pain case study : Helen

Helen suffered with pain in her knees for several years. She was referred for x-rays by her GP, who then diagnosed osteoarthritis. Helen was then referred to an orthopaedic specialist and placed on a waiting list for a clinic appointment.

Following her initial consultation with the orthopaedic team, Helen was listed for a left total knee replacement, which she underwent in 2023. Helen was told she would also need a right knee replacement to improve her mobility and reduce the pain she suffered daily.

Despite having had successful surgery on her left knee, Helen was reluctant to proceed to further surgery as she had started a new job and did not want to take time off work. Helen regularly cares for her grandchildren and following her surgery she also had to put this on hold to recover. She felt her mobility in the left knee was better following her surgery, although she still struggled with certain tasks like walking down stairs and on uneven ground. Her right knee had continued to deteriorate and she suffered increasing pain from this.

Helen researched alternatives which may offer some relief from the pain she was experiencing, and ‘buy her time’ before having to commit to further invasive procedures. This is when she discovered PRP treatment and found us at Oldgate Clinic.

Helen attended for a free consultation with our paramedic, Kurt, here in clinic. During the consultation they discussed Helen’s medical history, current medications and her concerns around her joint pain. Helen discussed with Kurt what she hoped to achieve – reduced pain and improved mobility. Following their consultation Kurt was able to recommend PRP treatment for Helen based on the information shared, and Helen was keen to proceed.

Helen then gave a sample of her blood, which was spun in our centrifuge machine here in clinic to separate the red blood cells from the plasma. The platelet-rich portion of her plasma was then injected into the knee joint using specialist techniques. The whole process, from venepuncture to completion of treatment, took a little over 30 minutes and Helen described minimal discomfort only during the process.

Following the procedure, Helen was able to walk out of clinic and wander around the town centre, before driving herself home. She experienced no ongoing pain following her PRP treatment and reports an almost immediate improvement in the joint pain she had been suffering from.

Helen is now several months since her initial treatment and is overjoyed with the results. She is taking less pain-relieving medications daily and can walk up and down the stairs freely. Helen has postponed her review with her orthopaedic team, and although the time may come when she proceeds with further surgery PRP treatment has definitely had a positive impact on her lifestyle and enabled her to carry on working and caring for her grandchildren.
